Mildred Natwick (1908 - 1994)The other Mildred had much in common with Ms. Dunnock, they were born in the same city, both had extensive Broadway stage experience, both played somewhat similar type roles. Mildred Natwick was born in Baltimore, Maryland on June 19, 1908 and enjoyed appearing in plays throughout her school years. It was not until she enrolled at Bennett College in New York that she seriously considered acting as a career. Like Ms. Dunnock, Natwick had sharp features and a Baltimore accent that was ripe for stage drama. She had a small frame and charming demeanor that served her career well. After a distinguished Broadway career, interrupted early in her initial years there, she moved on to a successful film and television career. Among her films were: "The Long Voyage Home" (1940) as Freda, her film debut; "The Enchanted Cottage" (1945) as Mrs. Minnett; "The Late George Apley" (1947) as Amelia Newcombe; "Three Godfathers" (1948) as The Mother; "The Kissing Bandit" (1949) as Isabella; "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" with John Wayne, as Mrs. Allshard; "Cheaper by the Dozen" (1950) as Mrs. Mebane; "Against All Flags" (1952) as Molvina MacGregor; "The Quiet Man" (1952) again with John Wayne, as Sarah Tillane; "The Trouble with Harry" (1955) as Mrs. Gravely; "The Court Jester" (1956) with Danny Kaye, as Griselda; "Tammy and the Bachelor" (1957) as Aunt Renie; "Barefoot in the Park" (1967) as Corie's Mother for which she received an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress; "If It's Tuesday This Must Be Belgium" (1969) as Jenny Grant, a favorite of mine; "At Long Last Love" (1975) as Mabel Pritchard; "Maid in America" (1982) with Ally Sheedy and "Dangerous Liaisons" (1988) as Madame De Rosemonde, her final film. She guest starred on numerous television series including: "McMillan and Wife"; "Hawaii 5-0"; "Murder She Wrote"; "Love Boat" and "The Bob Newhart Show." She was a regular on the TV series "The Snoop Sisters" with Helen Hayes as Gwendolyn Snoop, for which she won an Emmy in 1974. She died at her home in Manhattan, New York on October 25, 1994 of natural causes at age 86.
